I’d like you to look at the pictures attached. They are absolutely real and in no way are digitally manipulated. This is not a spam letter (don't all the spam letters start like that, though?) and in no way a joke; yet I don't want you to accept this completely without irony — I, for myself, would totally freak out if I learned I have a new sibling someplace out there (in fact, I did, when my mom told me). Hope I’ll not ruin your day by this letter. OK, here goes!

I think I'll start by introducing myself. I was born in Smolensk, Russia, where your father happened to work in the middle 90’s. He met a woman whom he had an affair with (I'm listening to a Leonard Cohen CD right now that they used to listen to) despite having a wife and two children, a son and a daughter, in Korea. The woman understood the situation perfectly, and after discovering her pregnancy, being thirty and childless, decided to keep the baby. Her family was in shock, but they managed somehow. I was born in 1996; in 2001, I've seen the last of my father, who, as you might've already guessed, happens to be yours as well.

That's how the story goes. My mother kept your existence in secret, and it's only recently that I found out about you.

I’m not going to ask you for money or any such thing, that would be absurd. However, I’d like to ask you two things: please, don't tell father, he shouldn't know I contacted you — I’ve sent him a long letter a year ago in which I accused him of not being responsible and abandoning me and my mother, and he never replied; even if you confront him, he will deny my existence. The second thing is, I'd like to get in touch with you. I'm sure we have a lot to discuss. If you are shocked by this or angry or if you think this is too weird, I understand. But please, do try to understand me as well — it was a hell, being raised in a country such as mine, only to find out that I have some relatives from, you might as well say, an alternative universe.

I've sent an identical message to your (and my) sibling, and I hope at least one of you answers me. Can't say I love you or anything like that (since I've never met you and that would sound cheap and insincere) but I'm certainly curious about you!

A letter that was never sent, 2017[1]
